Vauxhall Summer Proms – 11 July

VPG Summer Proms Poster

Having been on the Vauxhall Pleasure Gdns walk yesterday afternoon led by their historian David Coke, I am pleased to be able to publicise the Summer Proms being held in the modern Gdns on Saturday 11 July. The Proms are being organised with the involvement of the Friends group which works to improve the Gdns and to use the history of the historic gardens.

It was because of the Friends’ interest in that history that I arranged for Penny Corfield to give talks  in the local Festival in 2005 and 2006. These were then turned into a pamphlet which I published in time for the International Vauxhall Gdns Conference in 2008 held at Tate Britain.  The second edition of the pamphlet continues is a very readable and entertaining introduction to the history. David Coke’s magnificent book (Yale University Press) and his website  enable readers to explore the history in a lot more depth.

Yesterday’s walk was to raise money to restore the historic organ at St Peter’s Church which was built on part of the site of the historic gardens. Having been a member of the Committee that several years ago decided that the organ needed restoring, I was pleased as publisher to have a % of Penny’s pamphlets sold yesterday going to the restoration fund. St Peter’s is a venue for excellent concert programmes during the year.
