An estimated 600 plus people heard Jeremy Corbyn speak in the Labour leadership context at the open meeting organised by Croydon TUC at Ruskin House on Tuesday 4 August. The audience was diverse and included many community activists and people who are not active politically or not involved in any political organisation.

Having been up North earlier in the day Corbyn arrived one hour late due to train problems. The audience, many of whom had started arriving from 6pm in order to guarantee a seat, waited patiently. The meeting overflowed into the garden with chairs and loudspeakers.

In the half hour or so before he arrived short speeches were made by Labour Councillor Jane Avis, Croydon Central Labour Party member Andrew Fisher (author of The Failed Experiment), and two leading trade unionists.

It is surprising that using details supplied by the Press Association, The Daily Mail gave a good report of the meeting.
